Our Top Posts From the Past Month

April 1st, 2009 by

Too many posts to handle? If you missed out on a great post from last month, here’s a quick digest of the top posts that you may want to check out:
  • Has Anyone Ever Written a Story About…..
Posted on Monday, March 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized - Comments: (2)
You’re thinking about writing a picture book about peacocks. It would be pretty useful to know if other books like this already exist. Unfortunately, this seemingly simple sort of query is actually one of the tougher challenges facing authors. Library card catalogues are often too general to indicate what else might be out there relating to a specific topic. That’s why the Children’s Picture Book Database from the University of Miami (Ohio) is such a cool tool.

  • Writing Picture Books: How to Captivate a Young Reader
Posted on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in writing tips - Comments: (6)
Picture books aren’t read, they’re performed. The very act of reading a story out loud to a child forces the reader to add inflection, dramatic pauses, and even ad-lib some commentary. Where the pages are turned can add (or detract) as much from the experience as the quality of the story itself.Picture books are almost always 32 pages long. There is no mysterious artistic reason for this; it’s simply how the printing presses work.
