I have a great idea for a book (and will keep that a secret, of course) but I haven't the first idea of how to go about it or who to contact once it's written. This is "Basics 101" I'm sure but where do I go from here? I read somewhere where 'editors' charge $2.50 a word (my GOD!) to even read something. Is this true?

I am retired and have written my first children's book to keep busy. I have read many how to publications on children's writing and find them very helpful. I have read your journal and find it fascinating and instructive. It helps in my efforts to write better.

Thanks

Rejection is hard to overcome. What I find hard is that I tend to think there must be something wrong with what I sent, that i've failed to meet the grade. This prevents me from sending it out again, which I know is wrong. It's a hurdle I know I have to overcome.

My nonfiction picture book was rejected after a requested revision. I took my time with the rewrite and followed the editor's detailed suggestions. I belong to two children's writers' critique groups. They are helpful but perhaps only to a point. I've had a requested revision on a previous book which was also ultimately not accepted. I feel I am so close to writing well enough for publication. (I've sold magazine articles) The good thing is I made a huge effort not to take this last disappointment to heart. In the past I've agonized and rerun scenarios endlessly trying to see where I went wrong. I feel much better this way. It's not me, it's something I wrote. Now I have to decide do I rewrite using comments from the rejection? Do I send it out again? Do I look for a more critical reviewer? I guess this is the writing life!

I recently had a manuscript for a children's picture book rejected by two publishers. It was my first attempt, so I'm not disheartened.
Because I had already done some research, I knew that the odds are about 1000 to 1 for having a picture book published. However, I'm not forgetting the idea altogether. Instead, I'm thinking about how to rewrite it so that it has better marketing appeal. I'm also going to undertake a short course to help me understand how to produce a great manuscript.
Most published authors will tell you to hang in there and keep trying. I also beleive that studying the art of writing is imperative. Either do a course, read books about writing, and critcally read books relating to the genre your are interested in writing
