I find most of the ideas for my books from true events or facts as well as places near my home. I believe this helps children in their own reading. I agree with the blog on picture books; you have to make them turn the pages. I recently wrote books on safety. One is called "No Says I love you." So I have this question often when the little boy does a silly thing, "What do you think his mom said?" and that's where the page turns. The children can say "No " or " No no no" as it goes on. I find they love that. Page turning at a point in the story also helps them predict a story- great teaching tool. I use that with "I know the Rules. Do you?" three children play, one is bossy and knows the rules about fire safety so one gets mad and goes home. Then the other friend Sam sees smoke- turn the page, and it's a fire at the other girl's home. It works well when reading aloud too.
